Light Sensitivity
Light sensitive? You may be surprised!
Light Variation
If we go from the outdoors on a bright sunny day into a dimly lit room, we can hardly see our surroundings at first. However, as time goes by, we gradually recover our vision. This phenomenon is known as ‘dark adaptation’, or the ability of the eye to become more visually sensitive after remaining in darkness for a period of time. The bright light momentarily dazzles us and all we see is white light because the sensitive of the receptors is set to dim light. In both scenarios, time is needed to regain comfort and a good visual performance
Light is essential to life and sight, and is a window to creating beautiful moments and memories. However, all day our eyes are exposed to a combination of many different light conditions, from various sources and all directions. Light can be obstructive or harmful, and may annoy us or adversely impact vision. Here are the most common situations in which people say light is troublesome…
Intensive sunglight
In intensive sunlight you’ll find you need to close your eyes or quint when exposed to the harsh sunlight as the eye attempts to protect itself. This experience results in either disabling or blinding glare.
night driving
Vehicle headlight can result in discomforting or disabling glare at night. Headlights are a focal or point-like source of artificial light - the smaller the size the more visual discomfort they will produce, and the closer they are the more disabling they will be.
COMPUTER AND DIGITAL SCREENS
Computer screens, LEDs, smartphones, and a whole array of connected devices have all had an impact on our everyday lives. Both exposure time and proximity to the source impact the visual discomfort and can lead to eye fatigue and eye strain. Although the light emitted by most LEDs appear white, LEDs have peak emission in the blue light range.
Light Intelligent Solutions
Light sensitivity is very common. In fact, 9 out of 10 people declare they experience sensitivity to light. There are several solutions available to you to help with light management. One such solution is Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses, which is ideal for many light sensitive people. Transitions lenses automatically adapt to changing light conditions. Responding to the light around you, they intelligently change from clear to dark when you go outdoors and back to clear when you return inside.
By optimizing the amount of light your eyes receive, Transitions lenses also help reduce glare, eye fatigue and strain, for more effortless sight. All Transitions lenses filter blue light from digital devices, screens and LEDs. Outdoors, Transitions also filter blue light emitted by the sun (the sun is the largest emitted of blue light!) and blocks 100% of UV.
